Music icon Elton John shocked fans and followers on Tuesday by revealing a serious health battle he has been privately facing. The 77-year-old singer shared a heartfelt message on his Instagram page, disclosing that he has been struggling with partial blindness due to a severe eye infection over the summer.
“Over the summer, I’ve been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye,” Elton John wrote. “I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process, and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.”
“I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks,” he continued. “I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far. With love and gratitude.”
The music star did not specify how the eye infection occurred or the exact nature of his condition. However, partial blindness can result from several causes, including severe infections that lead to complications like scarring or damage to the optic nerve. The singer’s statement suggests that he remains optimistic about his recovery, though the slow healing process indicates that it may be some time before he can return to his normal activities.
Fans around the world have flooded social media with messages of support and well-wishes, hoping for a full recovery for the legendary artist. Sending our love and support your way. Feel better soon, friend,” wrote Billie Jean King. “Protect Elton at all costs!” wrote another user. “Take your time and recover, Elton. We’ll be here waiting for your return when you’re healthy and ready ;)” singer T.J. Osborne wrote.
Elton John has been a towering figure in the music industry for over five decades, with a career marked by numerous hits, Grammy Awards, and a lasting legacy as one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
Renowned for hits like “Your Song,” “Rocket Man,” and “I’m Still Standing,” he has sold over 300 million records. Last year, he performed his final UK show of his farewell tour to an audience of around 120,000 at Glastonbury. The singer confirmed earlier this year that he has no plans to ever tour again.
